What Locals Love about Boston

People move to Boston for different reasons. Some come for school, others for work, and plenty never planned on staying as long as they did. But ask someone who’s lived here for a few years what keeps them around, and the answers usually have less to do with famous landmarks and more to do with everyday life.

It’s being able to walk almost everywhere. It’s having a favorite neighborhood bakery, spending a summer evening along the Charles, or taking the commuter rail out of the city for the weekend. If you’re browsing homes in Boston and considering a move to the city, here’s a closer look at what locals love about Boston and what the residents love about life in Beantown.

Academia is part of everyday life

Even if you’re not a student, it’s hard to separate Boston from its academic roots. Colleges and universities are woven into the city, bringing new ideas, research, cultural events, and people from around the world. “To me, Boston is known for its academic culture,” photographer Adrianne Mathiowetz shares. “This is most apparent in the sheer number of colleges and universities in the area, but is also manifested in tangential ways: the thriving public radio and broadcasting community with multiple stations and distributors, the top hospitals and research centers from Boston Children’s to Dana Farber, the incredible art museums from the MFA to the De Cordova, and the writing, theater, and comedy scenes. Everything invites critical thinking, discussion, and further study. As a portrait photographer, it was natural to start focusing my work almost entirely on writers since there are so many in the area.”

Every neighborhood feels like its own place

Boston doesn’t have just one personality. Walking through Beacon Hill feels nothing like spending the afternoon in Allston or Jamaica Plain, and that’s part of the appeal. You can live a few miles apart and have a completely different experience of the city.

“Boston is one of the best places to live in the world,” Saysha Thind with Boston Interior Design shares. “There is a healthy balance between the arts and cultural events while being a center for education and the ever-growing biotech industry. The Charles River offers residents the ability to enjoy the outdoors and frequent the beautiful neighborhoods, including shops and restaurants around the Back Bay area.”

People tend to become loyal to their neighborhood, whether that’s because of the local coffee shop, the park they walk every morning, or simply knowing the faces around the block.

You can actually get around without driving

Boston traffic gets plenty of attention, but many people living in the city don’t spend much time behind the wheel. Depending on where you live, it’s possible to walk to dinner, hop on the T for work, or bike along the Charles instead of sitting in traffic. The city isn’t huge, and that makes everyday errands feel manageable.

There’s always somewhere to be outside

One of the biggest surprises for people moving to Boston is how much time people spend outdoors. You’ll see runners along the Esplanade before work, people reading in the Public Garden at lunch, and groups meeting up on the Harborwalk once the weather warms up. Even in the middle of downtown, it’s easy to find somewhere to slow down for an hour.

“Boston offers a lifestyle that’s difficult to match,” the team at Joshua Alan Interiors begins. “It’s a hub for exceptional architecture, interior, art, and culture, where America’s historical and first landmarks exist alongside thoughtfully designed contemporary spaces. With easy access to the ocean, mountains, and lakes of New England, the city offers an effortless balance of urban sophistication and outdoor living. It’s this richness of place—where history, design, and nature intersect – that continues to make Boston one of the country’s most compelling places to call home.”

The city is a hub where industries come together

One reason people find Boston to be a great place to live and stay in the city is the variety of career opportunities and blend of industries. “Boston is one of the few cities where world-class research, entrepreneurship, technology, and design are deeply interconnected,” says George Zheng, a Harvard-trained architect and founder and CEO of Edensign, an AI virtual staging and real estate listing intelligence platform incubated at Harvard Innovation Labs. “The proximity of Harvard and MIT, Kendall Square’s startup ecosystem, the Longwood Medical Area, and the city’s growing design and technology communities allows researchers, founders, investors, and creatives to collaborate closely and turn new ideas into real products, companies, and urban solutions. That innovation-driven culture also influences how Boston approaches architecture, housing, and neighborhood development, with a strong respect for historic character alongside thoughtful, modern design.”

The city has long been known for its universities and hospitals, but that’s only part of the picture. “People hear “technology hub” and assume Boston mostly produces software. But as an industrial photographer, I get to see how much of the region’s innovation is still physical,” David Degner, Industrial and Commercial Photographer, explains. 

“I’ve photographed climate-tech startups at Greentown Labs, dairy farmers using digesters to turn manure and food waste into renewable energy, memory-restoring neural implants, massive offshore infrastructure projects, and a new generation of apprentices learning trades in local union halls. That combination of academic research, skilled trades, and hands-on engineering is what makes Boston’s economy, and its job market, so distinctive.”

The past and present exist side by side

One of the things that gives Boston its character is how naturally it blends old and new. You can walk down a cobblestone street lined with buildings that have stood for centuries, then turn the corner and find modern office towers, new restaurants, or a growing biotech campus. “Boston is known for the way it blends historic character with the energy of a modern, constantly evolving city,” photographer Heidi Kirn details. “From its distinctive neighborhoods and waterfront views to its walkable streets, architecture, restaurants, and cultural institutions, the city offers something different around nearly every corner. As a photographer, I especially appreciate how Boston’s history and contemporary life coexist so naturally, giving the city a strong sense of place.”
