7 Things People Forget When Moving: A Complete Checklist

Moving is one of those life events that feels manageable in theory and absolutely chaotic in practice. Whether you’re relocating to a walkable urban hub like Jersey City, NJ, or making your way to a world-class destination like San Francisco, CA, one thing stays the same: the details have a way of slipping through the cracks. You’ve got the big stuff handled, the truck is booked, the boxes are (mostly) packed, and you’ve mentally said goodbye to your old place. But somewhere between the first trip and the last box, a surprising number of important things tend to get overlooked.

Whether you’re moving out for the first time or you’ve done this enough times to have a system, these are the most common things people forget when moving – and how to get ahead of them.

1. The walk-through inspection

This one catches a lot of renters off guard, often right at the end when they’re expecting their security deposit back. Jesse Villanueva of Five Star Property Management puts it plainly, “Most tenants don’t pay much attention to the Walk-Through Inspection form; they tend to leave out items that are wrong with the unit or don’t put down any cracks or nail holes on the wall when they should.” He adds that failing to complete the walk-through in the given time frame is just as problematic. “If renters don’t report needed maintenance in a timely manner, then it becomes negligence on their part.”

As soon as you move in, fill out that form thoroughly and honestly. Document everything, including pre-existing scuffs, holes, and damage, and report any maintenance issues promptly throughout your tenancy. It protects you just as much as it protects your landlord.

2. Updating your address

It sounds obvious, but address changes are one of the most frequently forgotten moving tasks. Most people remember to update their bank and employer, but the list goes much further than that:

• The IRS and your state tax agency
• Your doctor, dentist, and pharmacy
• Subscription services and online retailers
• Your voter registration
• Insurance providers (health, auto, renters or homeowners)
• Any loyalty or rewards programs

Set aside time before moving day specifically for this task. The USPS mail forwarding service is a helpful safety net, but it’s not a substitute for actually updating your address with the people who matter.

3. Transferring or setting up utilities

Nothing kills the excitement of a new place like showing up and realizing you have no internet, no electricity, or no gas. Utility transfers are easy to forget when you’re focused on the physical move itself. And truthfully, getting settled into a new home goes far beyond just the utilities.

Make a list of every utility connected to your current home and your new one. Contact each provider at least two weeks in advance and schedule your disconnection and connection dates to overlap slightly with your move so you’re never left without service on either end.

4. Basic supplies for both ends of the move

Here’s something a lot of people don’t think about until they desperately need it: having basic supplies ready at both your old place and your new one. Nancy Clark of Alamo Apartments recommends keeping on hand, “toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, and plenty of water or canned drinks.” She explains why trash bags in particular make such a difference, “Having plastic trash bags at the ready makes tossing or taking with you more convenient than juggling random jars and bottles in your arms at the last minute.” And the paper towels do double duty. As Nancy puts it, they’re useful “for the final swipes at spills when you’re departing a residence” and just as handy “for wiping up footprints at your new address generated by all the in and out traffic on moving day.”

5. Measuring before you move

Your couch fits perfectly in your old living room, however, that doesn’t mean it’ll fit in the new one. Measuring furniture and doorways before moving day is one of those tasks that feels unnecessary until you’re trying to angle a king-sized bed frame through a narrow hallway at 8 PM. If you have access to your new home’s floor plan, it can be a huge help at this stage. Redfin has a great breakdown of how to use floor plans when evaluating a home that’s worth a look before you start moving things around.

Measure the large items you’re bringing and compare them against the doorways, hallways, and rooms in your new space. It’s also worth measuring windows before buying new curtains or blinds, and any built-in spaces like closets or alcoves where you’re planning to add shelving.

6. Cleaning responsibilities

Most leases require you to leave the unit in the same condition you found it, which typically means a thorough cleaning before you hand over the keys. This includes:

• Inside appliances (like the oven, fridge, and microwave)
• Cabinet interiors
• Window sills and blinds
• Baseboards and vents
• Bathrooms, including grout and caulk

Don’t leave this for the last hour. Build cleaning into your timeline so you don’t forget when moving, ideally after everything is out of the space so you have full access to every corner.

7. Important documents

It’s surprisingly easy for important paperwork to get shuffled into a random box during a move. Before packing day, gather all critical documents and keep them somewhere separate and clearly labeled, and carry them personally rather than load them onto the truck.

This includes:

• Lease agreements and property records
• Passports, birth certificates, and Social Security cards
• Medical and vaccination records
• Financial documents and tax returns
• Insurance policies

A single accordion folder or document box can hold everything and save you a stressful search later.

One last thing before you go

Moving will probably never be completely stress-free, but it can be a lot smoother when you’re not scrambling to catch the most common things that people forget when moving. The items on this list are common precisely because they don’t feel urgent until they suddenly are. Get ahead of them early, keep a notepad handy, and give yourself more time than you think you need.
